Glenn Beck's gold-gate problem – Yahoo! News

Yet another controversy appears to be brewing around Fox News host Glenn Beck. Some are accusing him of a blatant conflict of interest concerning his frequent on-air promotion of an investment sold by one of his main advertisers: Gold.

For some time Beck critics have cried foul over his relationship with Goldline International, a precious metals vendor that features the TV and radio host’s endorsement prominently on their website. Critics charge that Beck is guilty of misleading his audience by often advising them to purchase gold in advance of the potential collapse of the value of the dollar on the world currency market, without disclosing that he is in fact a “paid spokesman” for Goldline. Beck’s on-air promotion of gold, which includes advising viewers to construct “fruit cellars” and to rely on a “three G system” of “God, Gold, and Guns” in the event of America’s collapse, dates back to his time as a host for CNN Headline News.

Glenn Beck also regularly talks up gold on his nationally syndicated radio show, where he often endorses Goldline during live commercial segments. Additionally, Beck has had the company’s CEO on as a guest. Advertisements for Goldline are also featured prominently on Beck’s own website, where he recently promoted gold in an audio clip warning of an apocalyptic future:

When the system eventually collapses, and the government comes with guns and confiscates, you know, everything in your home and all your possessions, and then you fight off the raving mad cannibalistic crowds that Ted Turner talked about, don’t come crying to me. I told you: get gold.
 
Back in October, the liberal media company Air America made this video mocking the conflict of interest:

Beck’s promotion of gold presents a potential problem for Fox News, which strictly prohibits on-air personalities from making paid product endorsements. When contacted by Daily Finance for a comment on the matter, Fox News senior vice-president for development Joel Cheatwood said the network “makes an exception for its commentators who are also radio hosts,” adding that they knew upfront that hiring Beck came with the understanding that he was also a radio host and that they “had to be accepting of certain elements of that.” Nevertheless, a Fox spokeswoman said that the company is addressing the matter with Beck’s agent, George Hiltzik.

However, Beck, who responded to the conflict of interest allegations on his show last Thursday by saying “So I shouldn’t make money?”, isn’t devoid of defenders on the matter. Business Insider called the controversy “nonsense,” adding “there’s nothing wrong with a commentator advising viewers, listeners, or readers to take positions that he is taking himself. In fact, you might wonder about the motivations of someone giving financial advice he wouldn’t take himself.”

In Beck’s defense, some have also noted that the price of gold has spiked since he started at Fox News. Nevertheless, you can probably bet that any and all future Jon Stewart impressions of Beck will include numerous references to the virtues of gold.

Low Vision And The Second Amendment

The term “low vision” is often poorly understood, which may partly account for a new context in which it has appeared in the media. Most states have concealed weapon permits to any adult citizen who can pass various tests and extensive background checks. Recently, controversy flared when it became known that permits have been issued to persons who are low vision. News stories have quoted anti-gun lobbyists who feel that this a terrible problem.

These handicapped permit holders are being hit with a double dose of discrimination. Not only are they treated differently because of their handicap, they are also stigmatized as gun owners.

Many persons with low vision are affected by the stigma attached to the word “blindness”. In fact, being low vision is not synonymous with complete blindness. The definition of legal blindness is corrected vision no better than 20/200 or a loss of peripheral vision that leaves only the central 20 degrees of vision. The definition of low vision is vision no better the 20/60-20-70. Many low vision persons use their remaining vision to perform a large range of visual tasks. They use low vision products.

Firing a handgun in self defense does not necessarily require good vision. Almost all defensive gun uses occur at short range and many within arm’s length. Studies of video from security cameras has shown that most defenders do not even use the sights to align their handgun with an attacker. At close range, simply pointing the weapon instinctively is the norm.

Another important fact to remember is that the majority of defensive gun uses, roughly 97 precent, end without a shot being fired. Criminals almost always break off an attack when they see that their victim is armed.

Low vision individuals have a legitimate fear of physical assault. They are often targeted by criminals for robbery and rape because they appear to be easy targets. Women who are pregnant, the elderly, or people who are affected by a temporary illness are also at risk.

The system of issuing concealed weapon permits has been a remarkable success in all thirty two progressive states where a “shall issue” system is in effect. The remaining states have a “discretionary” law – permits are issued at the whim of law enforcement officials. In these states most p

ermits are held by politicians, political contributors, celebrities and relatives of said officials.

The most important fact to remember, one that infuriates the gun haters, is that permit holders in every state have proven to be one of the most responsible and law-abiding segments of the population. There is no reason to believe that physically impaired citizens are any different.

It is bad enough that society discriminates, even if unintentionally, against the handicapped. Stripping them of the right to self defense adds insult to injury. The mean-spirited cultural war against gun owners is already nasty enough, we don’t need to start attacking the handicapped.

How to get more information – Ask your Eye MD for a Low vision Specialist. Low vision specialists are licensed doctors of optometry who are trained in the examination and management of patients with visual impairments. A few of them are ophthalmologists with additional training in low vision care. Their services do not offer a cure for the causes of low vision, but they do help the patient learn how to utilize their remaining vision to its fullest potential. Low vision care does not replace the possible need for other treatments such as laser, medication, and surgery.
